Advance
Hurricane Preparedness

ADVANCE HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS - It is very important for every owner to be prepared in advance for potential hurricanes. If you wait until after a hurricane warning is announced you could find yourself competing with hundreds of people for a limited stock of supplies and equipment. Don't wait too late to get prepared. ACT NOW!

PLEASURE ISLAND RESIDENT/OWNER DECAL - In order to re enter the island after a hurricane you must obtain a current decal from the City of Gulf Shores City Hall.

1. These decals are color-coded and list a zone number for the area in which you live.

2. The decal must be displayed in the lower left corner of the vehicle's windshield (driver's side).

3. The cost of the decals are only $1.00 each. You will need one for each vehicle.

4. You must furnish proof of residence or ownership at the time you apply for the decal. The deed to your property or a current electric bill showing your address is considered proof of ownership.

STOCK YOUR HOME - It is recommended that you stock a supply of food, water and supplies for emergency use.

1. WATER - The average person needs at least one quart of water every day. In the summer the need for water could easily double this amount. Several additional gallons should also be kept on hand for sanitary purposes. Store water in airtight plastic containers and replace it every two months to be sure it is pure.

2. FOOD - You should stockpile enough non-perishable food for you and your family for up to 3 days. You may be stranded in your home for several days or local stores could run short of supplies. Your emergency food supply is suggested to include these high energy items:

Dry milk, Canned fruit juices, Canned meats and fish, Meat substitutes (beans), Bread and crackers, Peanut butter, Dried fruit, Dry cereal, Granola bars or cookies...

SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT - Keep the following supplies in a place were you could quickly get to them in an emergency.

1. A battery-operated radio and or a special NOA emergency radio (with extra batteries).

2. Two flash lights (with extra batteries).

3. Paper plates and utensils.

4. A bottle and manual can opener.

5. Candles and matches.

6. A Coleman-type lantern or a battery powered lantern.

7. Toilet articles and sanitary needs.

MEDICINE - Be sure you have an extra supply of any medicine you take. If you must evacuate you may not have access to local pharmacies for refills.

IMPORTANT PAPERS - Gather all important papers such as birth and marriage certificates, wills, insurance policies, deeds, etc. and place in a secure waterproof container. Place this container where you can quickly locate it in an emergency.
